The World Health Organization (WHO) has indicated that obese individuals are 3 times as more likely to be at risks of diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and dyslipidemia than normal individuals. They are also twice as likely to be at risk for cancer (i.e., colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and endometrial cancer) and hypertension. In the top 10 leading cause of death among the Taiwanese population, 8 of which are related to obesity.
The data from the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2013 indicated that the obesity prevalence in Taiwan is 38.3% (male:45.9%, female:33.1%). The obesity rate in Taiwan is the highest among Asian countries.
